Wimbledon A Brief History
Wimbledon is a suburb in south west London, part of the London Borough of Merton and located 7 miles (11.3 km) from Charing Cross. Wimbledon has been internationally known as the home of the Wimbledon Tennis Championships. The small club in the area held it’s first Lawn Tennis Championship in July 1877. Over the next 50years, the popularity of the sport increased dramatically. Soon the spectators outweighed the venue’s small accomodations and the club moved closer to Wimbledon Park. Officially, the first Wimbledon Championships Tennis Tournament was first played in 1932.
